BALBRIGGAN MAN RETURNS AS CONTEST CHAMPION
WE all have heard the expression 'having a canary' and usually it is a bad thing but for a certain Balbriggan man who has several of the birds, the expression has a whole new meaning after returning from Portugal as a world champion. Eddie Darcy from Fancourt Road in Balbriggan has been a canary fancier for a decade now and has a number of the prized birds which he keeps and exhibits in competitive shows around Ireland and the world. His most recent competition was the prestigious World Bird Show in Matosinhos in Portugal where 20,000 birds of various shapes sizes and breeds were exhibited.
Eddie specialises in canaries and was crowned a world champion at the event with one of his birds winning a gold medal and another taking home a bronze.
His two prize-winning Irish Fancy canaries were a Clear Buff Hen and Variegated Buff Hen. He travelled to the competition with the Eire Ornithological Association which had 62 birds of various kinds entered in the huge show.
