Air contamination descends 300 meters in Arequipa

Health authorities warned the Arequipa region of a change in air contamination that endangers the local population. Normally the contaminated air hovers at 700 meters, but it is now occuring at 400 meters, according to La Républica.
According to Zacarías Madariaga of regional health management, polluted air may cause various respiratory infections and affect the vulnerable ecosystem of the area.

However, he noted that low temperatures and the chain of volcanoes prevent pollution from spreading easily.

The authorities in Arequipa have proposed the removal of old cars that cause more pollution as well as campaigns such as "A day without a car" to combat the problem.
