Composer Igor Stravinsky wrote an opera based on the tale. Stravinsky began his adaptation in 1908, but put it aside for several years. He completed the opera in 1914, after which was he turned aside from large productions to concentrate on chamber music and the piano.
It is a fantasy opera that has become better known in an orchestral suite, The Song of the Nightingale. The entire opera's first performance was on 26 May 1914 in the Théâtre National de l'Opéra in Paris, France and it had singers in the pit with their roles mimed and danced on stage.
