The enterprising folks at Kino Video, who keep a particularly sharp eye on restorations of classic films from around the world, have a real winner in their beautiful new edition of "The Cat and the Canary,'' supervised by London's Patrick Stanbury and Kevin Brownlow.

This sylish late silent, directed by Germany's Paul Leni for Universal, is the quintessential haunted-house movie, remade several times including a notable 1939 version with Bob Hope that is available only as a gray-market title. Kino is offering "Cat'' either as a standalone title or as part of its new "American Silent Horror Collection,'' including another splendid Leni-Universal restoration, "The Man Who Laughs'' (1928) with Conrad Veidt; Wallace Worsley's "The Penalty'' with Lon Chaney Sr., The 1920 edition of "Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde'' starring John Barrymore and "Kingdom of Shadows,'' a documentary that includes clips from 50 silent horror flicks. The latter was was directed by Bret Wood, who designs the superb menus for most of Kino's releases.

DAN LEVINSON and his CANARY COTTAGE DANCE ORCHESTRA

The Canary Cottage Dance Orchestra is Dan Levinson's newest ensemble, a six-piece unit consisting of violin, C-melody saxophone, trombone, piano, banjo, and drums. This unique group is devoted exclusively to "rag-a-jazz," a hybrid style of dance music that existed briefly from the mid teens through the early twenties, while ragtime was evolving into jazz. Modeled after a little known group called the Frisco Jazz Band--the first jazz band to record for the Edison label--the Canary Cottage Dance Orchestra's spirited repertoire includes one-steps, two-steps, fox-trots, waltzes, and other dances popular at the dawn of jazz.

Blue Canary- Geocoin

The reverse of the coin has an outline of the State of Mississippi and three flags. Mississippi was admitted to the Union on December 10, 1817. On January 9, 1861 it succeeded from the Union and was admitted to the Confederate States of America on March 27, 1861. On February 23, 1870 it was readmitted to the Union.

The three flags are the current flags of the United States of America and the State of Mississippi and the last official flag of the Confederate States of America. The obverse of the coin has the logo of Blue Canary, who has been geocaching since February 21, 2003. A blue canary is a term used only half in jest by firemen in referring to law enforcement officers at a hazardous materials incident. Unfortunately, Hazmat training for law enforcement has lagged behind that of fire fighters. Law enforcement is usually trained to rush immediately to any incident they are called to. Fire fighters have been trained to observe the area as they approach. Only half jokingly fire fighters are taught in responding to hazardous material incidents to observe any law enforcement officers already on the scene to see if the ”Blue Canaries" appear OK or are prone on the ground. Blue Canary is a retired law enforcement officer.

Zinnia - Canary Bird :
The Canary Bird Zinnia, 'Zinnia elegans', produces large 4 to 5 inch brilliant yellow flowers on 3 foot tall plants. The Zinnia plant is very easy to grow. For long hot summers, nothing beats zinnias for brilliant bloom color and long bloom period. The Canary Bird Zinnia is an annual plant that produces the best flowers in full sun.
Zinnia elegans prefer rich, deep and well drained soil. For best results mix a high phosphorus, low nitrogen fertilizer in with the soil. Plant in late spring, about two week after average last frost. Canary Bird Zinnias are great for cut and dried flowers and are also excellent in large pots and containers.
